Before law school, work.

Q: What should I do to prepare for law school?

A: Take at least a year and work.

--

I am a big advocate of working between undergrad and law school.

It can be waiting tables, teaching (what I did), banking, marketing, art docent, artist, . . . you name it.

It can be a year, two years, five years . . . you name it.

I think taking some time, a pause before rushing into more school, does a couple of things:

⏸ It allows you to use a different part of your brain--the "not a student" brain.

⏸ It gives you real world experience, which puts what you learn in law school in a different context.

⏸ It will help you appreciate the freedom and fun that often comes with being a student.

⏸ It will help you confirm whether you actually want to go to law school.

Law school is not for everyone.

It should not be rushed into.

It should not be the fallback option when you have no clue what else to do (with your life or your undergrad degree).

Take the time.

I don't know anyone who worked between undergrad and law school that regrets it.

What's your advice for people trying to gear up to go to (or make the decision about whether to go to) law school?
