COB

COB: Close of business (5 PM in the relevant time zone).

EOB: End of business (same).

EOD: End of day — wishy washy.

For some, EOD = 5 PM.

For others, EOD = midnight.

For another set, EOD = whenever you stop working for the day.

The first time someone told me to get something to them by “COB,” I had to look it up.

No shame in that. It is basically a new lawyer right of passage.

But, if someone tells you “by EOD,” make sure to follow up, “Do you mean 5 PM or midnight or somewhere in between?”
