Inner Critic

"Turn down the volume on your negative inner critic.

Create a nurturing inner voice to take its place.

When you make a mistake, forgive yourself, learn from it, and move on, instead of obsessing about it.

Equally important, do not allow anyone else to dwell on your mistakes or shortcomings, or to expect perfection from you."

-- Beverly Engel, "The Nice Girl Syndrome"

I heard this quote yesterday and I haven't stopped thinking about it.

My inner critic is loud.

I allow others to dwell on my mistakes (because I dwell on them).

I allow others to expect perfection from me (because I have trouble not expecting it from myself).

But, freedom comes from checking these voices--internal and external voices.

Freedom comes from believing that imperfection and mistakes are part of our common, human experience.

Today, I will try to shift my inner critic to an inner coach.

Today, I will recognize that mistakes have happened and will continue to happen, because I am trying new things and became I am human.

Today, I will acknowledge that I'm not perfect, that no one is.
