Where we stand.

Why does #lawyerwellbeing matter?

Attorneys are unwell--and we self-report as being so.

I'm not here to stigmatize, police, or diagnose. I am not a doctor, psychologist, or psychiatrist.

Like many of you, I am a practicing attorney--I am a corporate professional.

I have deeply struggled with my own mental health and wellbeing.

I have experimented with just about every tool, technique, and support system out there--to better myself and build a more sustainable career.

I want to emphasize: All of these things--depression, anxiety, substance use and abuse, suicidality--these are human problems.

Not attorney problems. Human concerns.

The studies and reports provide a variety of reasons why our profession exacerbates these issues and/or attracts individuals prone to these concerns.

I raise this point because we cannot improve the profession if we don't acknowledge where we stand.

Talking about it, destigmatizing it, is the first step to making it a better, more sustainable profession for everyone.
