Micro Breaks

Sometimes, in the law, there is no rest for the weary.

Finish a big hearing.

Client emails await.

Complete first draft of a big motion.

New documents come in to review.

Even if I set boundaries,

Even when I take a break,

The overwhelm can feel nearly constant.

Podcast after podcast, book and article after book and article, on well-being, explain the solution: micro breaks.

A mini reset during the moment, which can look like:

🧘‍♀️ A walk around the hall (or building or block);

🧘‍♀️ Watching a TikTok (or two);

🧘‍♀️ Listening to your favorite song;

🧘‍♀️ Completing a puzzle (or Wordle, or Sudoku);

🧘‍♀️ Calling or texting a friend;

🧘‍♀️ Standing outside and breathing in the fresh air (or looking out window, since: winter).

And really, so, so much more.

I know when I need these breaks.

I know when I don't take them, I end up taking an even longer break, usually to organize my files and make a to-do list or take a nap (or go to sleep) then start over with a clean slate.

These micro breaks help me complete the stress cycle (until I can work out or take a macro break and really move through the stress).

They help me fight the overwhelm and reframe, so that my strengths can shine (and my weaknesses remain in check).

Here's to taking micro breaks and remembering:

I have the tools to tackle what might come next.
