No Task Too Small

No task is too small.

As an associate, you'll be asked to do things that are not fun.

You'll be assigned things that are not shiny and not always sophisticated.

Even so: most of these things are critical to moving cases forward.

You can (and should) ask the assigning attorney how the task fits into the bigger picture--how it adds value to the case.

And then: do the work and do it well.

This is how you build credit.

This is how you show you're timely, detail-oriented, and trustworthy.

This is how you build connections on teams, with legal assistants, and paralegals.

This is how you start receiving more substantive roles, more sophisticated work, more shiny opportunities.

Adding value means treating all tasks as if none are beneath you.

Owning assignments, no matter how small, is how you become a go-to associate and build an internal (and external) reputation.

No task is too small.
