Question Asker
In 10th grade science, Coach Lund was our teacher. I loved the class.
Chemistry, in particular, was always a favorite. I didn't take it in college because of the horrible pre-med stories I heard and I wanted to have fond memories of it forever.
Because I loved the class, loved to learn, and was curious, I asked a lot of questions. A lot of questions.
My classmates did not love this. They dubbed me the "question asker."
But, that's me: a question asker. How else can you learn? And I love learning.
This serves me well on some fronts (not all--ask my husband about that another time).
For example: depositions.
I live for them. If I could take depositions all day, every day, I would, without hesitation.
Depositions are questions--a conversation, a time to learn, a time to corner the facts and poke holes in the other side's case.
One question + One answer = another question, and another. Getting to follow the leads wherever they go, while also trying to target questions to get at the nuggets that help my client(s)--so fun. Really.
Another example: client pitches and business development.
It all boils down to a conversation and a chance to learn--about the other person, the other company.
Asking questions and turning their answers into more questions, as a way to learn and figure out how my firm (and I) can serve their needs, delightful.
In high school--and in law school (another topic for another day)--I asked questions. I loved to learn, so I asked away. But, I sometimes hesitated. I often worried about others' perceptions of me and my questions.
I try to push that away now. Asking questions is who I am. It is what I do. And, most times, it serves me (and my clients) well.
