Take a break.

You can take breaks. You get to take breaks. You deserve to take breaks.

Walking away is an option. Walking away is necessary.

Busy is idolized in our society and in our profession.

The #billablehour requirements and revenue expectations are real--so, very real.

But: you are a human.

You cannot be the best attorney you can be without taking breaks, without sometimes walking away.

You cannot be the best employee, partner, friend, sibling, parent, child, advocate, or human, if you do not take breaks, if you do not sometimes walk away.

I am not good at this.

I often let workout routines and nutrition fall by the wayside in place of work.

I often feel guilty for running errands when work is slow, for taking a nap between meetings, for doing chores while working from home.

But: I never regret doing these things.

What makes me feel bad is the anticipation I work up in my mind--the fear and doubt I create for myself, the worry that some unnamed, no-face partner is watching my every move.

How much of what I tell myself about taking a break is made up by me?

A ton.

I suspect I'm not alone in this.

So, to those thoughts, I say: I can take breaks. I get to take breaks. I deserve to take breaks.
