Take a Walk

By nature, I am a positive person. I live by the golden rule and give people the benefit of the doubt (maybe, sometimes, too many benefits in the face of too many doubts).

And yet, I also experience low mood. Days when, despite the evidence in front of me, it is a bit of a slog to get going.

On those days (and really every day in big law), I ask myself, "What can wait?"

And, when everything can wait (or after I take care of the things that cannot wait), I take care of myself--of my mind.

This is the first habit that goes when life and work start to move fast. And, letting it go burns me every time. Every. Single. Time.

Today that low mood crept in. So, I gave myself grace, started slow, and asked myself, "What can wait?"

This morning, things could wait. So, I took care of myself and did my favorite thing: a long walk on The Lake.

It is trying to be Spring here. The Sun is a drug and a long walk a cure for that pesky low mood that sometimes lingers around me.

Many of us push through life's lowness (of all varieties). Sometimes we're required to. And that requirement becomes the default. It is my default if I'm not careful (and I'm often not careful about it).

I'm grateful that today I listened to what I needed. I know it'll pay off the rest of the day (and longer).
