The Grace Period

Grace Period (noun): The period immediately after a deadline or obligation when the consequence for failing to meet that deadline or obligation is waived.

According to Wikipedia, during a grace period, “people who habitually fulfill their obligations on time, but are late on a rare occasion due to special circumstances, can avoid a penalty and maintain their reputation for timeliness provided they fulfill the obligation within the grace period.”

When we extend grace to others, we view them with compassion. We offer understanding even though they have not earned it.

Another definition of “grace” is “courteous goodwill.” It is the understanding and even forgiveness of mistakes, lapses in judgment, and hurtful behavior.

With this monthly* newsletter, I hope to extend grace to each of you: a moment of compassion and understanding, a reflection on what it means to give ourselves grace—even when we don’t feel we deserve it or we don’t think we’re receiving it from others.

Although I will address topics through the lense of #BigLaw, I think all professionals can apply the lessons I’ve learned navigating a tough profession to their own work and self-care practices.

Thank you for joining me and welcome to: The Grace Period.

*Practicing what I preach is important to me. In order to not oversell myself or my capacity, I commit to a monthly note. Based on interest and availability, letters may occur more often.
