Well-Being In Law Week
Today is the start of Well-Being Week in Law.
Most of you know that lawyer well-being is a passion of mine.
But, often, attorneys associate the topic with (A) doom and gloom about the mental health and substance abuse challenges lawyers face and/or (B) trite suggestions for getting better (walk more, take a spa day, journal).
Neither of those things are typically helpful if not coupled with a dose of real world application and vulnerability.
But, to start, we must recognize one thing: attorneys are humans. It is part of our shared human condition to sometimes struggle with our mental health and well-being.
Attorneys are not some special subset of mankind that makes us immune to recognizing or fixing these things, or able to superhumanly overcome them on our own.
It is true: lawyers self-report as having higher instances of mental health struggles and substance use + abuse.
The first step to improving that is saying it aloud and not hiding from it any longer.
Now that it is being talked about more, what's next? I'll share each day this week about why well-being matters (for humans and for the business) and practical things you can try to improve your own mental health and well-being and support others on that journey.
