11.1.24 Billable Hour Check

November 1, 2024 -- the first business day of the month, so I'm here to report on my billable hour requirement.

At my firm, partners are expected to bill (or track) 2,400 hours. This can be a mix of billable client work and non-billable working time (also called investment time).

October hit me like a freight train, so I'm now well ahead of target.

For the remaining two months of this year, I need to bill/track 192 hours, or 96 hours a month.

In November, I hope to take one personal day off from billing, as well as Thanksgiving and the day after.

The week of Thanksgiving, if possible, will hopefully be half billing days, so I can enjoy some time with my family in Atlanta.

So, I'll have 15 full billing days, 3 half billing days, and 16.5 days all in.

96 / 16.5 = 5.8 hours a day.

Most days, I will likely bill much more than that.

What this number tells me is this:

If it slows down again, I'm okay. I have room, and lots of days in December, to catch up.

Or, if it continues to be a sprint, I can bank hours and have less guilt when it is slow and/or around the holidays.

It is wild that 2024 is coming to a close--my first full year as partner.

It has been such a good one and I look forward to ending on a high note.

❤️🔥✌🏻
