Day Zero

Today is Day Zero.

My busy season is over.

And this weekend, I’m a deer widow.

And next week: I don’t plan to work.

How do you prepare for a week off—even when you’re going nowhere?

First, I tell people fairly early: “Heads up, I plan to be OOO on these dates.” I also include a note about how much or how little I plan to be online.

Second, I keep a living chart of all my active matters: case name, number and court; matter number; team members: pending deadlines and any other worthwhile notes. I circulate this to everyone my last day before being out.

Third, before I go out I provide teammates on big cases with a substantive update, including any tasks that may need to be addressed while I’m out.

Fourth, to unplug, I’ve started deleting the Teams and Outlook apps from my phone. I have no self control and will constantly check them without this step.

Fifth, I log off and enjoy.

What’s your vacation routine?
