Ebbs & Flows
When I talk about the #billablehour, people always ask: What if you don't have enough work to fill your plate and meet your goals (or your requirement)?
The ebbs and flows of this job are the hardest thing for me to get used to--I never have and maybe I never will.
Slow times happen.
The first 1.5 months of 2024 have been slow on the billable front. That is okay. I filled the extra space with lots and lots investment time--and introspection on this new chapter.
Even so: I worried about it. I wondered if work would return. I questioned if I would forget how to work hard and have big billing days. I felt guilty for taking it slow on the weekends.
And now: work has ramped back up, I'm working away, having to push aside some investment time, putting out fires left and right, managing competing deadlines, and wondering if I can get it all done.
This cycle will repeat until I retire, and I'll continue to ride it out--making the most of the slow times and reminding myself it'll be slow again when it all piles back up.
