Juneteenth 2022

On June 19, 1865, the Union Army declared free the enslaved people of Texas.

Celebrated as Juneteenth, this day marks the true independence of our nation and all of its citizens.

Struggles for equality continue, and I hope we will strive to persist in those efforts.

Today, it feels odd to have off for Juneteenth.

These types of holidays largely benefit white professionals, not those the holiday actually celebrates or recognizes.

To combat that tension, I encourage you to take action by educating yourself about the holiday.

If able, please also consider donating to causes serving the Black community.

There are many local and national causes worthy of support, as well as businesses that you might already enjoy.

For me, that means:

πŸ’š America’s Black Holocaust Museum, to support a local cause.

πŸ’š Birth Equity, to support a national cause (black women should not face the disproportionate birth risks they do).

πŸ’š Carmen James, an Instagram influencer I respect and admire, who consistently educates her followers with grace and patience.

Please share other ways white allies can commemorate and support this day.

If I have misspoken or misstepped in these comments, please let me know. I strive to be conscientious with my content and supportive with any impact.
