Like My Job

I like my job.

I like being an attorney.

And, gasp, I like being an associate.

Attorneys are notorious complainers about work.

It’s cool to be busy.

It’s cool to grind away.

It’s cool to complain.

It’s cool to leave.

Sure, this profession is not for the faint of heart.

But, I’ve always struggled with the general, negative mentality about our profession.

#Biglaw itself often has a grouchy air about it.

But, except for one year in Midwest Big Law, I have been truly happy and fulfilled as an associate.

Yes: I've had bumps.

Yes: I've had doubts.

But more often than not, I've thought of myself as “the happy associate” in a world of people who seem disgruntled with their jobs.

Overall, I look back fondly on my years as a junior and mid-level associate--the friendships made and lessons learned, the experiences.

Right now: I love being a senior associate.

I look forward to what is to come.

You can too.

I am not a fluke.

You can be happy as an associate.

You can be content in Big Law (or the profession generally).

The tasks are intellectually stimulating.

The work is challenging.

The friendships and relationships are meaningful.

The service (of clients and community) is fulfilling.

The opportunities for personal development are substantive.

The chance to change the profession for the better is right in front of us.

Big law is not for everyone.

Being in private practice is not for everyone.

That is okay.

If it is for you,

If you like it here,

You are not alone.

I like it here, too.
