Micromanagers

Someone said to me recently, "Micromanaging is bullying."

In an instant, my most recent experience with a micromanager came into perspective.

Micromanaging is about a several things: fear, control, insecurity, lack of trust.

Micromanaging does not build teams. It tears them apart.

Micromanaging does not build support or comradery. It creates uncertainty.

Those traits that give rise to micromanaging--fear, insecurity, lack of trust--only increase as the micromanager continues their ways.

You will encounter micromanagers in the law.

Why?

Because the law is filled with humans.

Because the profession does not teach people how to manage others.

Because traditional partnership systems do not lend themselves to accountability or consequences if the micromanager is deemed necessary or beneficial to the system ($$$).

I don't have all the answers for dealing with and surviving under a micromanager.

But know this: it is not about you.

It is about them and their control, insecurity, fear, and lack of trust.

You will never be good enough for a micromanager.

Hopefully you can find other managers and colleagues to talk to when you face it.

Hopefully you can find others who will help you get out from under the micromanager.

Hopefully you are empowered to find your own way out if it comes to it.

Hopefully you will then endeavor to learn how to manage others in a more empowering, less micromanaging way.

That's my goal, every single day.
