New Billing Month

Welcome to September--a new billing month.

I did not meet my August billing goal.

I missed it by ten hours.

But, because I exceeded July's goal by 18 hours:

It is a wash.

And, I can stick to my annualized, monthly billing goal of 160 (1900 base requirement divided by 12--that's really 158.3333333 but I prefer round numbers).

What does that look like this month?

There are 21 work days in September.

I will work 18.5 of those days (missing one day to close on a new home, another to fly home to Atlanta, and a half day due to a lengthy, non-billable meeting).

160 / 18.5 = 8.7 hours for full days and 4.4 hours for the half day.

Some days, I will bill more.

Some days, I will bill less.

Some times, I will work a Saturday or Sunday.

I will adjust the daily and weekly goals as those things happen.

And, I will try to remember the grace I gave myself at the end of August: If I hit 8.7 hours through billable and non-billable work, non-billable work that is productive and meaningful to push my practice forward, I'll accept that as a full billing day and try to take some pressure off.

How do you keep on top of your billable hour requirement?
