Saying No
I am not good at saying no.
I want to be.
I try really hard.
It is just so difficult.
Sometimes, this is because I'm a people pleaser.
Other times, this is because I genuinely like what I'm being asked to do.
When you enter #BigLaw, you're told:
Say yes to everything.
Be available for everything and to everyone.
We should qualify this:
Say yes and be available to the extent you are able (and have capacity) and to the extent it serves your long-term career goals.
If you do not check this concept, you will say yes to so much that your work product cannot match your abilities or others' expectations.
If you do not check this sentiment, you will burn out.
Full stop.
Say yes.
Be available.
But not at the cost of your mental health, capabilities, or self worth.
Easier said than done, always.
But, good mentors will help you figure it out.
And worthwhile firms will support you as you try to do so.
