Stalking Partners
Okay, let's get real: One of the first things you'll need to learn as an associate is this:
How to stalk partners.
🤯😳☠️
I know, I know.
It sounds crazy.
But it is real, very real.
Partners are Capital-B, Busy.
You'll start out overly polite: "Hi, Partner, I'm just following up on my below email. Please advise as to what else you need from me, and I look forward to your feedback."
You'll fear, "I am bothering them with this pestering."
Then, you'll start pacing outside their office (perhaps more than once throughout the day).
Next, you'll get to know their assistant, asking them to notify you as soon as the partner is available (off the phone, out of a meeting, back at their desk).
Eventually, it'll turn into a negative notice in your emails: "If I do not hear from you by XYZ date and time, I will take ABC action to ensure we meet the deadline."
Or, simply, "Bumping this for your attention."
If you're like me, you'll never get used to this.
It is what it is.
It is awkward and uncomfortable
It is part of the job.
I wish someone had given me a heads up on day one.
