Terminate

Most people don't like to think about the end of a relationship when just starting out.

But, I urge you: before signing a contract (for goods or for services), review the agreement's termination provision.

Is there one?

If yes, at what point can you terminate?

If yes, is it reasonable? Does it make sense? Is it practical to implement if things go sideways?

If yes, does it give both sides an out, or just the drafter?

If yes, does it explain what rights are preserved or waived if a party terminates?

If not, what is your out if things go south?

Contracts govern businesses and people--and both are unpredictable.

Protecting yourself with a practical and straightforward termination provision is one way to bake in some predictability.
