Vision Journaling
Back to reality.
Coming out of 9 days of rest, returning to work can feel daunting.
One thing that helps me is vision journaling.
Pick a date and time in the future--an hour to 20 years, you pick.
Then start free writing, answering the question, "How do I want to feel at [insert date and time]?" Or, "What do I want my life to look and feel like at [insert date and time]?"
For me, today, that looks like:
Friday 12/2 at 630 PM
I went back to work this week, finally well rested after a very busy season.
I eased into Monday, after taking my dog to the vet (routine appointment). Although I had a lot of meetings on Monday, I was still able to catch up on emails, have some deep work, and move things ahead. I even got in a workout after my last meeting of the day.
The rest of the week went well: lots of space and time. I even got to do something I love: talk to students about well-being in the law--at both of Wisconsin's law schools. A dream-come-true moment for me, and I really let it all sink in.
I continued to evaluate opportunities and commitments, asking myself, "What can wait?" and "Does this help me be less busy?" I'm finding renewed confidence in my boundaries, which creates space. With that space, this week I completed all assigned workouts and even snuck in some walking time on three other days.
Tomorrow, we host some friends for dinner and I look forward to sharing our new home with them--and the Christmas tree. I'm ready for a restful weekend and whatever work brings next week.

It is amazing what can flow from your pen when you allow yourself time and space to look ahead and be creative with what life might bring.
My life doesn't unfold according to these vision journals, but it does help my mind and heart know what I really want out of the time period I'm working with.
What do you envision for your future?
